示眾云：「半夜捉烏雞，驚起梵王睡，毘藍風忽起，吹倒須彌山。官路無人行，私酒多人喫，當此之時，臨濟德山開得口、張得眼，有棒有喝用不得。汝等諸人，各自尋取祖業契書，莫認驢鞍橋作阿爺下頷。」

He instructed the assembly, saying: "Catching a black chicken at midnight startles King Brahmā from sleep; the Vairambha wind suddenly rises and blows down Mount Sumeru. On official roads no one travels; illicit liquor many people drink. At such a time, Linji and Deshan can open their mouths and widen their eyes, but their sticks and shouts cannot be used. All of you must each seek your ancestral deeds and contracts; do not mistake a donkey's saddle-bridge for your father's lower jaw."
