示眾云：「說妙談玄，乃太平之姦賊；行棒行喝，為亂世之英雄。英雄姦賊，棒喝玄妙，皆為長物，黃檗門下，總用不著。且道，黃檗門下，尋常用箇甚麼？咄！」

He instructed the assembly, saying: "Speaking of the wondrous and discussing the mysterious are the treacherous rebels of a peaceful era; using the stick and shouting are the heroes of a chaotic age. Heroes and treacherous rebels, sticks and shouts, the mysterious and the wondrous—all are superfluous things; under the gate of Huangbo, none of them can be used at all. Tell me, under the gate of Huangbo, what is normally used? Bah!"
