上堂，舉：「馬祖因僧問如何是祖師西來意，祖云：『近前來，向汝道。』僧近前，祖攔腮一掌云：『六耳不同謀。』」師云：「古人尚乃不同謀，如今無端聚集一百五六十人，欲漏洩其大事？如今忽有明眼人覰見，是一場禍事。雖然如是，如今既到這裡，將錯就錯，鬼神茶飯也少不得。」良久云：「十字街頭吹尺八，酸酒冷茶愁殺人。」以拂子擊禪床。

Ascending the hall, he brought up: “Because a monk asked Mazu, ‘What is the meaning of the ancestral master’s coming from the West?’, the Patriarch said, ‘Come forward, and I will tell you.’ The monk stepped forward, and the Patriarch slapped him across the cheek, saying, ‘Six ears do not plot together.’” The Master said: “Even the ancients did not plot together; now, for no reason, one hundred and fifty or sixty people gather, wishing to leak the great matter? If a person with clear eyes should catch sight of this right now, it would be a disaster! Even though it is like this, now that we have arrived here, following error with error, the food and drink for ghosts and spirits cannot be omitted.” After a long pause, he said: “Blowing the shakuhachi at the crossroads; sour wine and cold tea cause people grief.” He struck the Chan seat with his fly-whisk.
