Where conditions reach an end, stretch out the donkey's foot;
When the donkey's foot stretches out, the Buddha's hand opens.
Let it be known to students of the five lakes:
Penetrate each and every one of the Three Barriers.
(All the above are from the *Wudeng huiyuan*. The *Songgu lianzhu* says: "Ancient Buddha Min of Yuantong on Mount Lu said: 'Formerly I saw Head Monk Guangbian collecting Master Nan's handwritten Three Barriers Gāthās, chanting them without omission. Recently I have seen transcripts in various places that are incomplete and contain many errors, hence I note them here, and so forth.'" The verses are identical to those recorded in the *Huiyuan*. The *Chanlin leiju* attributes these four verses to Ancient Buddha Min, which is probably an error. The *Yunwo jitan* records this affair of the gāthās, which also agrees with the account of the *Huiyuan* and the *Lianzhu*.)
