上堂，拈拄杖云：「橫拈倒用，撥開彌勒眼睛；明去暗來，敲落祖師鼻孔。當是時也，目連、鶖子飲氣吞聲，臨濟、德山呵呵大笑。且道笑箇什麼？咄！」下座。

Ascending the hall, he took up his staff and said: "Taking it up horizontally and wielding it in reverse, it pokes open Maitreya's eyes; coming in light and going in darkness, it knocks away the patriarch's nostrils. At precisely such a time, Maudgalyāyana and Śāriputra swallow their breath in silence, while Linji and Deshan burst out in loud laughter. Tell me, what are they laughing at? Bah!" He descended from the seat.
