1.25

上堂，舉：「嚴陽尊者問趙州：『一物不將來時如何？』州云：『放下著。』尊者云：『既是一物不將來，放下箇什麼？』州云：『擔取去。』尊者言下有省。」師頌云：「一物不將來，肩頭擔不起，言下忽知非，心中無限喜。毒惡既忘懷，蛇虎為知己，光陰幾百年，清風物未已。」以拄杖卓禪床，下座。

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Venerable Yanyang asked Zhaozhou, 'How is it when not bringing a single thing?' Zhaozhou said, 'Lay it down.' The Venerable said, 'Since I do not bring a single thing, what should I lay down?' Zhaozhou said, 'Carry it away.' At these words, the Venerable had an awakening." The Master recited a verse: "Not bringing a single thing, / The shoulders cannot bear the load. / At his words, suddenly knowing his error, / In his heart there is boundless joy. / Poison and malice once forgotten, / Snakes and tigers become intimate friends. / Through several hundred years of time, / The pure breeze has never ceased." Striking the Chan seat with his staff, he descended from the seat.
