1.26

上堂，舉：「臨濟問監院：『什麼處去來？』院云：『州中糶黃米來。』臨濟以拄杖面前劃一劃云：『還糶得這箇麼？』院便喝，濟便打。典座至，濟乃舉前話，典座云：『院主不會和尚意。』濟云：『爾又作麼生？』典座便禮拜，濟亦打。」師云：「喝亦打，禮拜亦打，還有親疎也無？若無親疎，臨濟不可盲枷瞎棒去也。若是歸宗即不然，院主下喝，不可放過；典座禮拜，放過不可。」又云：「臨濟行令，歸宗放過，三十年後，有人說破。」擊禪床，下座。

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Linji asked the prior, 'Where have you come from?' The prior said, 'I have come from selling yellow rice in the prefecture.' Linji drew a line in front of him with his staff and said, 'Did you manage to sell this too?' The prior shouted, and Linji struck him. When the tenzo arrived, Linji cited the previous exchange. The tenzo said, 'The prior did not understand the Master's intention.' Linji said, 'What about you?' The tenzo bowed, and Linji struck him as well." The Master said, "A shout was struck, and a bow was struck—was there any partiality or not? If there was no partiality, Linji cannot be wielding a blind flail and a sightless staff. If it were Guizong, it would not be so: when the prior shouted, he should not have been let off; when the tenzo bowed, letting him off would not do." He also said, "Linji executed the command; Guizong let them off. Thirty years from now, someone will explain it clearly." Striking the Chan seat, he descended from the seat.
