上堂，云：「金襴已傳，阿難尚懷猶豫；剎竿未倒，迦葉未免攢眉。諸上座！且道倒那箇剎竿？初機晚學罔測，蓋是尋常久在叢林，十箇有五雙莽鹵。去聖時遙，人多懈怠。」下座。

Ascending the hall, he said: "The golden robe having already been transmitted, Ānanda still harbored hesitation; before the monastery flagpole was knocked down, Kāśyapa could not avoid furrowing his brows. Venerable elders! Tell me, which monastery flagpole was knocked down? Beginners and late learners cannot fathom it; ordinary people who have long been in the monastic groves—ten out of ten—are reckless and crude. We are far removed in time from the sages, and people are mostly indolent." He descended from the seat.
