因出州退院迴，上堂云：「流水下山非有戀，片雲歸洞本無心，竹屋茆堂誰是主，月明中夜老猿吟。」擊禪床，下座。

Because he had left the prefecture, retired from the monastery, and returned, he ascended the hall and said: "The flowing water descending the mountain has no longing; / A solitary cloud returning to its cave is fundamentally without intention. / In the bamboo house and thatched hall, who is the master? / In the bright moonlight at midnight, an old ape howls."
