歲旦上堂，僧問：「不求諸聖，不重己靈，未是衲僧分上事。如何是衲僧分上事？」師云：「三十年來，罕逢此問。」進云：「恁麼則辜負諸聖去也。」師云：「話也未答，何言辜負？」僧撫掌一下。師云：「吽，放過即不可。」

Ascending the hall on New Year's Day, a monk asked: "Not seeking the sages and not valuing one's own spirit are not yet the patch-robed monk's proper business. What is the patch-robed monk's proper business?" The Master said: "In thirty years, I have rarely met with this question." [The monk] advanced and said: "If so, then you have failed the sages." The Master said: "I have not even answered your words; why speak of failing?" The monk clapped his hands once. The Master said: "Humph! Letting you off will not do."
