師乃云：「四象推移，終而復始；二儀交泰，允屬茲辰。俗諦紛紜，各敘往來之禮；真如境界，且非新舊之殊。何故？豈不見道：一念普觀無量劫，無去無來亦無住。既絕去來，有何新舊？既非新舊，又何須拜賀，特地往來？但能一念常寂，自然三際杳忘，何去來之可拘，何新舊之可問。故云：如是了知三世事，超諸方便成十力。」良久云：「如斯舉唱，人人盡知；破二作三，能有幾箇？何故？時人祇解順風使帆，不解逆風把拕！」擊禪床下座。

The Master then said: "The four seasons shift and transition, ending and beginning again; the two polarities harmonize in peace, truly belonging to this day. In saṃvṛti-satya, all is bustling, each exchanging customary greetings of coming and going; yet in the realm of tathatā, there is fundamentally no distinction between new and old. Why? Do you not see it said: 'In a single thought, one universally contemplates immeasurable kalpas; there is no going, no coming, and also no abiding.' Since coming and going are cut off, what new or old is there? Since it is neither new nor old, why is there need for bows and congratulations, or purposeful coming and going? If you can only remain constantly still in a single thought, naturally the three time-periods will be entirely forgotten. What coming and going could constrain you? What new and old could be asked about? Therefore it is said: 'Understanding the matters of the three times in this way, one transcends all expedient means and realizes the ten powers.'" After a long pause, he said: "Everyone knows how to expound it like this, but when it comes to shattering two to make three, how many are capable? Why? People of the time only know how to sail with the wind; they do not know how to hold the rudder against the wind!" He struck the Chan seat and descended from the seat.
