師乃舉：「僧問鏡清：『新年頭還有佛法也無？』清云：『有。』僧云：『如何是新年頭佛法？』清云：『元正啟祚，萬物咸新。』僧云：『謝師答話。』清云：『老僧今日失利。』又僧問明教：『新年頭還有佛法也無？』教云：『無。』僧云：『年年是好年，日日是好日，為什麼却無？』教云：『張公喫酒李公醉。』僧云：『老老大大，龍頭蛇尾。』教云：『老僧今日失利。』」師乃云：「鏡清失利即不問，爾諸人作麼生是明教失利處？若人辨得，文殊頭白，普賢頭黑；若辨不得，黃蘗今日失利。」下座。

The master then cited: "A monk asked Jingqing: 'At the beginning of the new year, is there still the Buddhadharma or not?' Jingqing said: 'There is.' The monk said: 'What is the Buddhadharma at the beginning of the new year?' Jingqing said: 'The prime first month initiates good fortune; the myriad things are all renewed.' The monk said: 'I thank the master for answering.' Jingqing said: 'This old monk has suffered a loss today.' Again, a monk asked Mingjiao: 'At the beginning of the new year, is there still the Buddhadharma or not?' Mingjiao said: 'There is not.' The monk said: 'Every year is a good year, every day is a good day; why then is there not?' Mingjiao said: 'Master Zhang drinks wine, and Master Li gets drunk.' The monk said: 'So very venerable and old, yet a dragon's head with a snake's tail.' Mingjiao said: 'This old monk has suffered a loss today.'" The master then said: "I will not ask about Jingqing's suffering a loss. All of you, where is Mingjiao's suffering a loss? If anyone can distinguish it, Mañjuśrī's head turns white and Samantabhadra's head turns black. If you cannot distinguish it, Huangbo has suffered a loss today." He descended from the seat.
