歲旦上堂，僧問：「舊歲已去，新歲到來，不涉二途，乞師指示。」師云：「東方甲乙木。」進云：「人天聳耳，專為流通。」師云：「流通事作麼生？」進云：「若不得流水，幾乎過別山。」師云：「三十年後，也好商量。」

Ascending the hall on New Year's Day, a monk asked: "The old year has passed, and the new year has arrived. Without involving both ways, I beg the master to give instruction." The master said: "In the east, jiǎ and yǐ are Wood." [The monk] advanced and said: "Humans and devas prick up their ears, solely for the sake of propagation." The master said: "What is this matter of propagation?" [The monk] advanced and said: "Had it not obtained the flowing stream, it would almost have crossed another mountain." The master said: "Thirty years hence, it may well be discussed."
