上堂，云：「黃梅夜半傳心偈，少室巖前斷臂時，剜肉作瘡不知痛，直至如今成是非。」以拂子擊禪床，下座。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] said: "When at midnight on Huangmei the verse transmitting the mind was given, and when before the crag of Shaoshi the arm was cut off—gouging out flesh to make a wound, unaware of the pain—it has led straight down to the present day to make right and wrong." Striking the Chan seat with his fly-whisk, he descended from the seat.
