1.57

上堂，云：「有一人朝看《華嚴》、暮看《般若》，晝夜精勤，無有暫暇；有一人不參禪、不論義，把箇破席日裡睡。於此二人，同到黃龍，一人有為，一人無為，安下那箇即是？」良久云：「功德天，黑暗女，有智主人，二俱不受。」以拂子擊禪床，下座。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] said: "There is a person who reads the Avataṃsaka in the morning and the Prajñā in the evening, diligent day and night without a moment's leisure. There is a person who does not practice Chan or discuss doctrine, but takes a tattered mat and sleeps during the day. If these two people arrive at Huanglong together—one being purposeful and one being non-purposive—which one should be settled?" After a long pause, he said: "Puṇyalakṣmī and the Dark Maiden—a wise master of the house accepts neither." Striking the Chan seat with his fly-whisk, he descended from the seat.
