1.58

上堂，云：「大覺世尊道：我今為汝保任此事，終不虛也。汝等當勤精進，行此三昧。」師云：「精進即不無，諸人作麼生是三昧？」良久云：「迦葉糞掃衣，價直百千萬，輪王髻中寶，不直半分錢。」以拂子擊禪床，下座。

Ascending the hall, [the Master] said: "The World-Honoured One, the Great Awakened One, said: 'I now preserve and maintain this matter for you; it is ultimately not in vain. You should be diligent and energetic, practicing this samādhi.'" The Master said: "Vigor is not absent, but what is this samādhi for all of you?" After a long pause, he said: "Kāśyapa's rag robes are worth hundreds of thousands, while the jewel in the wheel-turning king's topknot is not worth half a penny." Striking the Chan seat with his fly-whisk, he descended from the seat.
