上堂，僧問：「師登寶座，四眾臨筵，的的西來，請師舉唱。」師云：「雲開山嶽秀，水到四溟寬。」進云：「一句已蒙師指示，今日得聞於未聞。」師云：「脚跟下一句，作麼生道？」僧云：「若不伸三拜，爭顯我師機。」師云：「更有什麼事？」僧禮拜，師云：「記取者僧話頭。」問：「先聖有八萬四千法門，門門見諦，學人為什麼觸途成滯？」師云：「何得自家退屈？」僧云：「急切處，請師舉。」師云：「露柱𨁝跳上三十三天。」僧云：「拈却佛殿，去却案山，脚跟下去西天有多少？」師云：「楊岐被爾問倒。」僧云：「將謂無鼻孔。」師云：「三十年後，自家面赤。」師乃云：「風不鳴條，雨不破塊，此是俗漢時節，作麼生是衲僧應時應節底句？」遂拍禪床一下云：「直待彌勒下生時。」

Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "The master mounts the precious seat, and the fourfold assembly attends the gathering. Please, Master, bring up and proclaim the real meaning of the coming from the West." The master said: "The clouds part and the mountain peaks are elegant; the waters reach the four seas and broaden." [The monk] advanced and said: "Having already received the master's instruction in one phrase, today I have heard what was never heard before." The master said: "What phrase do you say beneath your feet?" The monk said: "If I do not offer three prostrations, how can my master's dynamic function be revealed?" The master said: "What else is there?" The monk made a prostration. The master said: "Remember this monk's topic of discussion." [A monk] asked: "The ancient sages had eighty-four thousand Dharma gates, and every gate sees the truth; why does the student meet with obstruction at every turn?" The master said: "Why must you back down and yield of your own accord?" The monk said: "At the critical juncture, please, Master, bring it up." The master said: "The bare pillar jumps up to the Thirty-Three Heavens." The monk said: "Removing the Buddha hall and doing away with the table mountain, how far is it beneath your feet to the Western Heavens?" The master said: "Yangqi has been floored by your question." The monk said: "I had thought you had no nostrils." The master said: "Thirty years later, your own face will turn red." The master then said: "'The wind does not whistle through the branches; the rain does not break the clods'—this is the season for worldly fellows. What is the patched-robed monk's phrase that corresponds to the time and season?" He then struck the meditation bench once and said: "Wait until Maitreya descends to be born!"
