一日，數人新到相看，師云：「陣勢既圓，作家戰將，何不出來與雲蓋相見？」僧打一坐具，師云：「作家師僧。」僧又打一坐具，師云：「一坐具兩坐具，又作麼生？」僧擬議，師乃背面立，僧又打一坐具，師云：「爾道，雲蓋話頭在甚處？」僧云：「在者裏。」師云：「三十年後自悟去在，雲蓋在上座手裏，且坐喫茶。」師又問：「夏在甚處？」僧云：「神鼎。」師云：「早知上座神鼎來，更不敢借問。」

One day, several people newly arrived to pay their respects. The Master said: “The battle array is complete; masterly generals of battle, why do you not come forth to meet Yungai?” A monk struck his sitting cloth once. The Master said: “An adept monk!” The monk again struck his sitting cloth once. The Master said: “Striking the sitting cloth once, striking the sitting cloth twice—what about that?” The monk hesitated. The Master turned his back and stood; the monk struck his sitting cloth once more. The Master said: “You tell me: where is Yungai’s topic?” The monk said: “It is right here.” The Master said: “You will realize it yourself thirty years from now. Yungai is in the elder’s hands. Sit for a while and drink tea.” The Master also asked: “Where did you spend the summer retreat?” The monk said: “Shending.” The Master said: “Had I known earlier that you came from Shending, I wouldn't have dared to question you.”
