師訪孫比部，值判公事次，部云：「下官為王事所牽，無由免離。」師云：「此是比部願弘深廣利濟群生。」比部云：「未審如何？」師云：「應現宰官身，廣弘悲願深，為人重指處，棒下血霖霖。」比部因頌有省，乃歸小廳，坐次却問：「下官每日持齋喫菜，還合諸聖也無？」師以頌贈之：「孫比部，孫比部，不將酒肉污腸肚，侍僕妻兒渾不顧。釋迦老子是誰做？孫比部，孫比部。」

The Master visited Vice-Director Sun when he happened to be deciding official matters. The Vice-Director said: “This subordinate official is entangled in royal affairs and has no way to be free of them.” The Master said: “This is the Vice-Director’s vow, vast and broad, to benefit sentient beings.” The Vice-Director said: “I wonder how that is?” The Master said: “Manifesting the body of an official, / Vastly extending deep vows of compassion: / Where you point it out again to people, / Blood pours down beneath the staff.” The Vice-Director had an awakening due to the verse. He then returned to the inner hall, and while seated, he asked: “This subordinate official observes a vegetarian fast and eats vegetables every day; does this accord with the sages or not?” The Master presented him with a verse: “Vice-Director Sun, Vice-Director Sun, / Does not defile his belly with wine and meat, / Completely disregarding servants, wife, and child. / Who made old man Śākya? / Vice-Director Sun, Vice-Director Sun.”
