上堂，僧問：「如何是臨濟下事？」師云：「五逆聞雷。」學云：「如何是雲門下事？」師云：「紅旗閃爍。」學云：「如何是曹洞下事？」師云：「馳書不到家。」學云：「如何是溈仰下事？」師云：「斷碑橫古路。」僧禮拜，師云：「何不問法眼下事？」學云：「留與和尚。」師云：「巡人犯夜。」乃云：「會即事同一家，不會萬別千差，一半喫泥喫土，一半食麥食麻，或即降龍伏虎，或即摝蜆撈蝦。禾山唯解打鼓，祕魔一向擎扠，者箇一場戲笑，皆因微笑拈花。白雲隨隊骨董，順風撒土撒沙，若無者箇腸肚，如何衣錦還家。且道還家一句作麼生道？今日榮華人不識，十年前是一書生。」

Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "What is the affair under Linji?" The Master said, "Hearing thunder at the five unpardonable offenses." The student asked, "What is the affair under Yunmen?" The Master said, "Red flags fluttering." The student asked, "What is the affair under Caodong?" The Master said, "Sending a letter that does not reach home." The student asked, "What is the affair under Guiyang?" The Master said, "A broken stele lying across an ancient road." The monk bowed. The Master said, "Why don't you ask about the affair under Fayan?" The student said, "I leave it to the Upādhyāya." The Master said, "The night patrolman violates curfew." He then said: "If you understand, all things are of one family; / If you do not understand, there are ten thousand differences and a thousand divisions. / Half eat mud and eat dirt; / Half feed on wheat and feed on hemp. / Or they subdue dragons and tame tigers, / Or they dredge up clams and scoop up shrimp. / Heshan only knows how to beat the drum; / Mimo always brandishes a pitchfork. / This whole play of laughter / All stems from smiling and holding up a flower. / Baiyun follows along with the hodgepodge, / Scattering dirt and tossing sand with the wind. / Without such guts and belly, / How could one return home clad in brocade? / Tell me, how do you speak a phrase of returning home? / Today's glory people do not recognize; / Ten years ago, he was a book-reading scholar."
