上堂，舉：「梁武帝問達磨：『如何是聖諦第一義？』磨云：『廓然無聖。』帝云：『對朕者誰？』磨云：『不識。』又僧問六祖：『黃梅意旨什麼人得？』祖云：『會佛法底人得。』僧云：『和尚還得麼？』祖云：『不得。』僧云：『和尚為什麼不得？』祖云：『我不會佛法。』」師云：「大小大祖師，問著底便是不識不會，為什麼却兒孫遍地？」乃云：「一人傳虛，萬人傳實。」

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "Emperor Wu of Liang asked Bodhidharma: 'What is the paramārtha of the noble truths?' Bodhidharma said: 'Vast emptiness, nothing holy.' The Emperor said: 'Who is facing We?' Bodhidharma said: 'Not knowing.' Furthermore, a monk asked the Sixth Patriarch: 'What kind of person attains the purports of Huangmei?' The Patriarch said: 'The person who understands the Buddha Dharma attains it.' The monk said: 'Does the Venerable Priest still attain it?' The Patriarch said: 'I do not attain it.' The monk said: 'Why do you not attain it?' The Patriarch said: 'I do not understand the Buddha Dharma.'" The Master said: "Such great ancestral masters—when asked, they just do not know and do not understand; why then are their descendants spread across the land?" Then he said: "One person transmits a falsehood, and ten thousand people transmit it as truth."
