小參，僧問：「施主遠趨於丈室，請師一句利於人。」師云：「教天下人成佛去。」學云：「悠悠塵內客，不謾入山來。」師云：「中間猶有眾生在。」僧便喝，師云：「且道是佛是眾生？」學云：「四面眼難謾。」師云：「儞向什麼處見四面？」僧拂袖歸眾，師云：「作家。」乃云：「滿口道得底却不知有，知有底又道不得，且道過在什麼處？將成九仞之山，莫惜一簣之土。」

At an informal gathering, a monk asked: "The donor has hastened from afar to the abbot's quarters; we request a single phrase from the Master to benefit people." The Master said: "Teach everyone in the world to become Buddhas." The student said: "A leisurely traveler in the dust does not climb the mountain in vain." The Master said: "In between, there are still sentient beings." The monk then shouted. The Master said: "Tell me, is it a Buddha or a sentient being?" The student said: "Mount Simian's eyes are hard to deceive." The Master said: "Where do you see Mount Simian?" The monk shook his sleeves and returned to the assembly. The Master said: "An adept." Then he said: "One who can speak with his mouth full does not know it is there; one who knows it is there cannot speak of it. Tell me, where does the fault lie? When a mountain of nine fathoms is about to be completed, do not spare a single basket of earth."
