上堂，舉：「藥山問石頭：『三乘十二分教，某甲粗知，承聞南方直指人心見性成佛，某實未明，乞師指示。』石頭云：『恁麼也不得，不恁麼也不得，恁麼不恁麼總不得。』山僧在眾日，聞兄弟商量道：即心即佛亦不得，不即心即佛亦不得。若恁麼說話，敢稱禪客？何故？殊不知石頭老人文武兼備、韜略雙全。若是四面見處，也要諸人共知，只見波濤涌，不見海龍宮。」

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "Yaoshan asked Shitou: 'As for the three vehicles and twelve divisions of teaching, I have a rough understanding of them. I have heard that in the south they point directly to the human mind to see one's nature and attain Buddhahood; I am truly not clear about this and beg the Master for instruction.' Shitou said: 'Thus will not do, not thus will not do, neither thus nor not thus will not do at all.' When this mountain monk was among the assembly, I heard the brethren deliberating, saying: 'Mind itself is Buddha will not do, neither mind nor Buddha will not do.' If one speaks like that, how dare one call oneself a Chan traveler? Why? They fail to recognize that the old man Shitou was equipped with both civil and military arts, complete in both tactics and strategies. If it is Simian's view, I would also have you people understand it together: one sees only surging waves; one does not see the dragon king's palace in the sea."
