1.30

諸院長老入山，師上堂云：「臨濟入門便喝，是甚盌鳴聲；德山入門便棒，抝曲作直；雲門三句，曹洞五位，大開眼了作夢。何故如此？國清才子貴，家富小兒嬌。」

When elders of various monasteries entered the mountain, the Master ascended the hall and said: "Linji shouting as soon as someone enters the gate—what kind of bowl-ringing sound is that? Deshan beating with the staff as soon as someone enters the gate—bending the crooked to make it straight. Yunmen's three phrases, Caodong's five ranks—dreaming with eyes wide open! Why is it like this? When the country is pure, talented men are prized; when the family is wealthy, small children are spoiled."
