上堂，僧問：「祖意教意是同是別？」師云：「人貧智短，馬瘦毛長。」乃云：「祖師說不著，佛眼看不見，四面老婆心，為君通一線。」便下座。

Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "Are the intent of the patriarchs and the intent of the teachings the same or different?" The Master said: "When a man is poor, his wisdom is short; when a horse is thin, its hair is long." Then he said: "The ancestral masters cannot speak of it, the Buddha eye cannot see it; / Simian's grandmotherly heart opens a thread of a path for you." He then stepped down from the seat.
