上堂云：「上是天，下是地，南北東西依舊位，釋迦老子弄精魂，達磨西來多忌諱，忽有箇漢出來道：『和尚低聲。』但向伊道：秖要拋塼引玉。」

Ascending the hall, he said: "Above is heaven, below is earth; north, south, east, and west remain in their old positions. Old man Śākyamuni works his marvelous spirit; Bodhidharma's coming from the west has many taboos. If a fellow suddenly stepped forward and said, 'Venerable monk, lower your voice,' I would just say to him: 'I only wanted to cast a brick to draw a piece of jade.'"
