上堂，舉：「雲門道：『平地上死人無數，出得荊棘林者是好手。』時有僧云：『恁麼則堂中第一座有長處。』雲門云：『蘇嚧蘇嚧。』太平即不然，平地上箇箇丈夫，荊棘林裏坐得底是好手。何故？」乃云：「格。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Yunmen said, 'On flat ground the dead are countless; one who can emerge from the bramble forest is an adept.' At the time a monk said, 'If so, then the head monk in the hall has a strong point.' Yunmen said, 'Suru suru!' Taiping is not so: on flat ground everyone is a great person; one who can sit in the bramble forest is an adept. Why?" He then said, "Ge!"
