3.28

復舉：「雲門示眾：『平地上死人無數，出得荊棘林者是好手。』時有僧出云：『恁麼則堂中第一座有長處也。』門云：『蘇嚧蘇嚧。』」師云：「雲門大似任公子設以五十犗，投竿釣東溟。山僧尋常善於包荒，不欲宣人之過。因甚如此？」擊拂子：「何官無私，何水無魚？」

He brought up [the case]: "Yunmen instructed the assembly: 'On flat ground, dead men are countless; one who can emerge from the forest of thorns is a skilled hand.' At that time a monk came forward and said: 'If so, then the head monk in the hall has merit.' Yunmen said: 'Sulu, sulu.'" The master said: "Yunmen was very much like Ren the Young Master who prepared fifty bullocks and cast his line to fish in the Eastern Sea. This mountain monk is normally good at bearing with faults and does not wish to proclaim people's errors. Why is this?" Striking his whisk, he said: "What official is without self-interest? What water is without fish?"
