上堂，僧問：「佛未出世時如何？」師云：「大憨不如小憨。」學云：「出世後如何？」師云：「小憨不如大憨。」乃云：「入荒田不揀，信手拈來草，不認大哥妻，元來是嫂嫂。鄭州出鵝梨，青州出大棗，無事巾單下，箇箇從頭咬。」

Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "How was it before the Buddha appeared in the world?" The Master said, "A great foolishness is not as good as a small foolishness." The student said, "How was it after he appeared in the world?" The Master said, "A small foolishness is not as good as a great foolishness." He then said, "Entering a wild field without choosing, / Taking up weeds at hand; / Not recognizing the eldest brother's wife, / She turns out to be sister-in-law. / Zhengzhou produces goose pears; / Qingzhou produces big jujubes. / When there is nothing to do under the baggage cloths, / Everyone takes a bite from the top."
