2.21

上堂云：「五千四十八卷，教理行果成見，祖師門下商量，須知一貴一賤，貴則珠玉難偕，賤則分文太遠，有人於此辨得，白雲與爾三十。忽有箇漢出來道：大丈夫賞罰分明，不知是那箇三十？」良久云：「三十年後。」

Ascending the hall, he said: "Five thousand and forty-eight scrolls— / Teachings, principles, practices, and fruits form views. / Discussing them under the Patriarch's gate, / One must know what is noble and what is base: / When noble, pearls and jade cannot equal it; / When base, a single copper is far too much. / If someone here can discern this, / Baiyun will give you thirty! / If suddenly a fellow were to come forth and say, 'A great man makes rewards and punishments clear; I wonder, which thirty is that?'" After a pause, he said, "Thirty years later!"
