2.39

上堂，舉：「僧問雲門：『如何是超佛越祖之談？』門云：『糊餅。』白雲即不然，忽有人問：『如何是超佛越祖之談？』只向伊道：『驢屎似馬糞。』又云：『破草鞋。』又云：『靈龜曳尾。』且道是同是別？試辨看。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "A monk asked Yunmen, 'What is the talk that transcends Buddhas and surpasses patriarchs?' Men said, 'Sesame cake.' Baiyun is not like this. If someone suddenly asks, 'What is the talk that transcends Buddhas and surpasses patriarchs?' I would only say to him, 'Donkey dung is like horse manure.' Also I would say, 'A worn-out straw sandal.' Also I would say, 'The sacred tortoise drags its tail.' And tell me: are these the same or different? Try to distinguish them!"
