2.4

上堂，僧問：「如何是白雲為人親切處？」師云：「愛捩轉人鼻孔。」學云：「便恁麼去時如何？」師云：「不知痛痒漢。」乃云：「四海五湖奇士，圍遶無狀村夫，只解拕犁拽耙，水草無底鉢盂。高懸羊頭賣狗肉，時中那辨精與麁，恁麼續佛壽命，誠哉天地懸殊。誰有拔山之力，橫身擔荷也無？有麼有麼？有即家門富貴，無那辜負老盧。」

Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "What is the place where Baiyun is most intimate with people?" The Master said, "I love to twist people's nostrils around." The student asked, "What about when one goes right along like that?" The Master said, "A fellow who feels neither pain nor itch!" He then said: "Extraordinary men from the four seas and five lakes / Surround an unprincipled village bumpkin / Who only knows how to drag a plow and pull a harrow— / Water and grass in a bottomless alms-bowl. / Hanging up a sheep's head to sell dog meat, / In the midst of the hours how can one distinguish fine from coarse? / Continuing the Buddha's lifespan like this— / Truly, heaven and earth are far apart! / Who has the strength to uproot mountains / And shoulder this burden across their back? / Is there anyone? Is there anyone? / If there is, the family gates are wealthy and noble; / If not, how we have let down old Lu!"
