上堂，舉：「僧問巴陵鑒和尚：『祖意教意是同是別？』鑒云：『鷄寒上樹，鴨寒下水。』」師云：「大小大巴陵，只道得一半。白雲即不然，掬水月在手，弄花香滿衣。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "A monk asked Upādhyāya Baling Jian, 'Are the patriarchal intention and the doctrinal intention the same or different?' Jian said, 'When chickens are cold they go up into trees; when ducks are cold they go down into water.'" The Master said, "Great as Baling is, he only managed to say half of it. Baiyun is not like that: Scoop up water, and the moon is in your hands; / Toy with flowers, and fragrance fills your robes."
