上堂云：「祖師遺下一隻履，千古萬古播人耳，空自肩擔跣足行，何曾踏著自家底。」

Ascending the hall, he said: / "The Patriarch left behind a single shoe, / For thousands and myriads of ages broadcast into people's ears. / In vain carrying it on the shoulder and walking barefoot, / When have they ever trodden on what is their own?"
