上堂云：「但知月圓月缺，誰知月缺月圓，忙忙乘船過水，不知過水乘船。百年三萬六千日，等閑老却朱顏，各自照鏡看，是什麼面孔？」

Ascending the hall, he said, "You only know the waxing and waning of the moon; who knows the waning and waxing of the moon? In haste you board a boat to cross the water, not knowing that to cross the water you board a boat. A hundred years are thirty-six thousand days; thoughtlessly the ruddy face grows old. Look in the mirror each of you—what kind of face is that?"
