2.61

上堂，舉：「僧問洞山：『如何是善知識眼？』山云：『紙撚無油。』若問白雲，對道：『無油不點燈。』雖然如是，也較洞山三千里，秖是其間有箇好處。有甚好處？諸人黑地裏撞著露柱，悟去也不定。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "A monk asked Dongshan, 'What is the eye of a kalyāṇamitra?' Dongshan said, 'A paper twist without oil.' Were you to ask Baiyun, I would answer, 'Without oil, one does not light the lamp.' Even so, this is still three thousand miles away from Dongshan; yet within it there is a good point. What is the good point? In the pitch-dark, you bump into the bare pillar, and perhaps you will awaken."
