Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "What is the Buddha?" The Master said, "The mouth is the gate of misfortune." He then said, "Today is the Lantern Festival: everywhere the lantern light is brilliant and clear. I know not what Heaven intends, that auspicious snow should turn into bitter snow. The poor are frozen like stiff silkworms; tortoises freeze until they become turtles. Only among the Chan practitioners of the four seas does each have grit added to their eyes. Why so? I will not say, I will not say." He descended the seat.
