謝街坊上堂云：「街坊昨日將一把沙到方丈前，一見老僧劈面便撒，賴遇老僧先見，衫袖一遮並不妨事。今朝舉似大眾，不敢隱藏。何故？賞伊膽大，下得者箇手脚。忽有人問白雲：『為什麼只恁休去？』不見道：老不以筋力為能。然雖如是，賓主歷然。」

Thanking the ward elder, he ascended the hall and said, "Yesterday the ward elder brought a handful of sand in front of the abbot's quarters; as soon as he saw this old monk, he threw it right at my face. Fortunately this old monk saw it first; covering with my sleeve, there was no harm at all. This morning I bring it up to the great assembly, not daring to conceal it. Why? I admire his great courage in daring to make such a move! If suddenly someone asks Baiyun, 'Why just let it drop like that?' Have you not heard it said: 'When old, one does not take physical strength as an ability.' Even though this is so, guest and host are distinctly clear."
