2.94

上堂，僧問：「如何是佛？」師云：「許多時向什麼處去來？」乃云：「達磨未來時，冬寒夏熱；達磨來後，夜暗晝明。諸人若下得一轉平實語，喫鹽聞鹹喫醋聞酸；若道不得，迦葉門前底。」

Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "What is the Buddha?" The Master said, "Where have you been going for so long?" He then said, "Before Bodhidharma came, winter was cold and summer was hot; after Bodhidharma came, night was dark and day was bright. If you can make a single plain and honest turning word, eating salt you smell saltiness, eating vinegar you smell sourness; if you cannot speak, it is the one before Kāśyapa's gate."
