I have heard that although the path of speech is cut off, there has never been an absence of speech; although mind and Dharma are both extinguished, the Dharma is invariably transmitted. It has the wonder of catching the hare and forgetting the snare, and lacks the delusion of mistaking the pointing finger for the moon. Therefore, ancestral masters arise to praise and proclaim it, as inexhaustible as taking from a foot-long stick; students follow and awaken to it, like the endless unlinking of rings. A special transmission outside the teachings—the Way is exalted for this. Master Yan, the Upādhyāya, traveled for long on pilgrimage, inquiring and requesting instruction without partiality. He was active in the courtyard of Huangbo and trod in the chamber of Baiyun. 'Ordinary mind is the Way'; whatever his hand touched turned to gold. A rouge-powdered beauty initiated the supreme dynamic; the Golden Ascetic found no place to rest his body. Chanting the cleverness mantra and singing songs of great peace were things unheard of throughout the regions, serving as warnings and exhortations for later generations. His other wondrous words cannot be fully discussed; spread across bamboo slips and volumes, may they serve as a mirror. Preface by Zhang Jingxiu, Administrator of Huangyan County, Taizhou.
