3.26

上堂云：「古人道：『無邊剎境，自他不隔於毫端，十世古今，始終不離於當念。』」師云：「是即是，只是太舊。雪峯示眾道：『盡大地撮來，如粟米粒大，拋向面前漆桶不會，打鼓普請看。』大眾！雪峯對面熱瞞諸人不少也。然雖如是，還有與雪峯同步底麼？試出來與五祖相見。有麼？若無……」遂拈拄杖卓一下舉起云：「五祖今日與雪峯，同乘槎泛四大海，穿八大龍王髑髏，經過百千箇須彌山，却回來法座上坐，又送雪峯歸雪峯山，只是不曾動著一步。諸人還信得及麼？若信不及……」遂舉拄杖云：「豈不見先師翁道：『放在臥床頭，急要打老鼠。』」

Ascending the hall, the Master said: “An ancient said: ‘Boundless Buddha-fields, self and other are not separated by the tip of a hair; ancient and modern across the ten times, beginning and end never depart from the present thought.’” The Master said: “True as it may be, it is merely too stale. Xuefeng instructed the assembly, saying: ‘Pinch up the whole great earth, it is the size of a grain of millet; toss it before you, and you lacquer tubs do not understand—beat the drum and summon everyone to look!’ Assembly! Facing you, Xuefeng hoodwinks everyone not a little. Even though it is like this, is there anyone who walks in step with Xuefeng? Step forth and meet with Wuzu. Is there anyone? If not…” Thereupon he picked up his staff, struck it once, held it up, and said: “Today, together with Xuefeng, Wuzu boarded a raft and drifted across the four great oceans, bored through the skulls of the eight great dragon kings, passed through hundreds of thousands of Mount Sumerus, and then returned to sit upon the Dharma seat, and also escorted Xuefeng back to Mount Xuefeng—merely without ever having moved a single step. Can you people still fully believe this? If you cannot fully believe…” Thereupon he held up his staff and said: “Have you not seen my late teacher-grandfather say: ‘Placed at the head of the bed, it is urgently needed to strike mice’?”
