Ascending the hall, the Master cited: “A monk asked Xuefeng, ‘How is it when it is the cold spring of an ancient ravine?’ Xuefeng said, ‘Staring with wide eyes, one does not see the bottom.’ The monk said, ‘What about one who drinks of it?’ Xuefeng said, ‘It does not enter through the mouth.’ Zhaozhou heard of this and said, ‘It must not enter through the nostrils.’ The monk then asked Zhaozhou, ‘How is it when it is the cold spring of an ancient ravine?’ Zhaozhou said, ‘Bitter.’ The monk said, ‘What about one who drinks of it?’ Zhaozhou said, ‘He dies.’” The Master said: “If someone were to ask Wuzu, ‘How is it when it is the cold spring of an ancient ravine?’ I would say to him: ‘Water.’ ‘What about one who drinks of it?’ I would merely say: ‘It immediately quenches thirst.’ If someone were to come forth and ask, ‘Is it one with or two from the waters of Caoxi?’ I would immediately say to him: ‘Branches and streams diverge, free and unhindered; watering fields in the lowlands, splashing vegetables on high ground.’”
