南泉示眾云：「三十年來，牧一頭水牯牛，欲擬東邊放，不免侵他國王水草；欲擬西邊放，不免侵他國王水草。不如隨分納些子，免被官主勞撓。」長慶云：「爾道南泉前頭為人？後頭為人？」雲門云：「且道牛內納？牛外納？直饒道得納處分明，我更問儞，牛在甚處？」師拈云：「一時穿却。」

Nanquan instructed the assembly, saying: 'For thirty years, I have herded a water buffalo. When I thought of letting it graze to the east, it could not avoid encroaching upon the water and grass of that king's realm; when I thought of letting it graze to the west, it could not avoid encroaching upon the water and grass of that king's realm. It is better to pay a little according to one's share, to avoid being troubled by the officials.' Changqing said: 'Do you say Nanquan was acting for others in the first part, or acting for others in the latter part?' Yunmen said: 'Tell me, was it paid inside the buffalo or paid outside the buffalo? Even if you can state clearly where it was paid, I further ask you: where is the buffalo?' The Master commented: "Pierced through all at once."
