2.10

舉：「長慶云：『淨潔打壘了也，却近前就我覓，我劈脊與爾一棒。有一棒到爾，爾須生慚愧；無一棒到爾，爾又向什麼處會？』」師云：「雪竇即不然，淨潔打疊了也，直須近前，我劈脊與爾一棒。有一棒到爾，爾即受屈；無一棒到爾，與爾平出。但與麼會。」

He brought up [the following]: "Changqing said, 'Everything has been tidied and cleared away, yet coming forward you seek from me; I will strike your back with a stick. If a blow reaches you, you must feel shame; if no blow reaches you, where will you understand it?'" The master said, "Xuedou would not act thus: everything has been tidied and cleared away, you must come straight forward, and I will strike your back with a stick. If a blow reaches you, you suffer an injustice; if no blow reaches you, it is an even draw with you. Just understand it like this."
