2.14

一日二人新到，師云：「座主衲僧？」僧云：「請和尚鑑。」師云：「一不成，二不是。」僧云：「不勞如此。」師云：「我且放過，朝到西天暮歸東土，作麼生？」僧無對，師云：「杜衲僧，參堂去。」

One day two newcomers arrived. The master said, "Sūtra-lecturers or patch-robed monks?" A monk said, "Please judge, upādhyāya." The master said, "The first did not succeed; the second is not right." The monk said, "Do not trouble yourself like this." The master said, "I will let it pass for now. In the morning reaching India, in the evening returning to the eastern land—how is it?" The monk had no reply. The master said, "Bogus patch-robed monk! Go to the monks' hall."
