舉：「洞山聰和尚，每見新到便問：『溈山水牯牛上堂，作麼生會？』前後皆不相契。師到，亦乃垂問，師云：『後人標牓。』洞山擬道，師以坐具拂一下便行，洞山云：『且來上座。』師云：『未參堂。』」

He cited: "Whenever Upādhyāya Cong of Dongshan saw a newcomer, he would ask, 'Guishan's water buffalo ascends the hall—how do you understand it?' Earlier and later, none resonated with him. When the Master arrived, Dongshan likewise posed this question. The Master said, 'A placard for later people.' Dongshan was about to speak; the Master gave a flick with his sitting cloth and walked away. Dongshan said, 'Come back for a moment, elder.' The Master said, 'I have not yet entered the hall to pay respects.'"
