舉：「歸宗問僧：『甚處去？』云：『諸方學五味禪去。』宗云：『我者裏有一味禪，為甚不學？』僧云：『如何是一味禪？』宗便打，僧云：『莫打，某甲會也。』宗云：『爾作麼生會？』僧擬開口，宗又打，黃檗聞舉云：『馬大師出八十四員善知識，問著箇箇屙轆轆地，只有歸宗老較些子。』」師云：「以強欺弱有甚麼難？我者裏有一味禪，為甚麼不學？但向道：『收。』待伊拈起。有般無眼漢，只管喫吽吽。雪竇門下誰敢？」便下座。

He cited: "Guizong asked a monk, 'Where are you going?' The monk said, 'To the various quarters to study the five flavors of Chan.' Guizong said, 'I have a one-flavor Chan here; why not study it?' The monk said, 'What is the one-flavor Chan?' Guizong immediately struck him. The monk said, 'Do not strike; I understand.' Guizong said, 'How do you understand?' As the monk was about to open his mouth, Guizong struck him again. Huangbo heard this cited and said, 'Master Ma produced eighty-four good spiritual friends; when questioned, every single one of them defecated and rolled around—only old Guizong was somewhat capable.'" The Master said, "Using strength to bully the weak—what difficulty is there in that? 'I have a one-flavor Chan here; why not study it?' Just say to him, 'Gather it in!' and wait for him to pick it up. There is a sort of blind fellow who simply takes the blow and grunts. Under Xuedou's gate, who would dare?" Then he stepped down from his seat.
