Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "What are the conditions of the season?" The Master said, "Drowsy fellow." The monk shouted. The Master said, "Pretending to be sober." He further said, "For example, when the world is destroyed and great waters surge in rivalry, countless sentient beings therein, whether drowned or not yet drowned, wail in grief to one another, looking up at the vast blue sky, all calling for rescue. At that very time, the devas of the fourth dhyāna heaven, upon seeing this, raise their voices and shout: 'Pah! Sentient beings! I warned you in advance, telling you to come up repeatedly. You would not listen at all—now what rescue can there be?'" Thereupon he clapped his hands once and said, "Return to the hall."
