2.16

一日宗首座到，方擬人事，師約住云：「既知信之韜略，便須拱手歸降。」宗云：「今日敗闕。」師云：「劍刃未施，賊身已露。」宗云：「氣急殺人。」師云：「敗將不斬。」宗云：「是。」師云：「禮拜著。」宗云：「三十年後有人舉在。」師云：「已放爾過。」

One day Head Monk Zong arrived. Just as he was about to make formal greetings, the master stopped him and said, "Since you already know Xin's military strategy, you should clasp your hands and surrender." Zong said, "Today I have failed." The master said, "Before the sword blade is drawn, the thief's body is already exposed." Zong said, "This takes one's breath away!" The master said, "A defeated general is not executed." Zong said, "Indeed." The master said, "Make your prostrations." Zong said, "Thirty years from now, someone will bring this up." The master said, "I have already let you pass."
