2.86

舉：「黃檗入堂，於南泉位中坐，泉問：『長老甚年中行道？』檗云：『威音王已前。』泉云：『猶是王老師兒孫，下去。』檗便起去。」師云：「可惜王老師只見錐頭利，我當時若作南泉，待伊道威音王已前，即便於第二位坐，令黃檗一生起不得。雖然如此，也須救取南泉。」

He cited: "Huangbo entered the hall and sat in Nanquan's place. Nanquan asked: 'In what year did the elder practice the Way?' Huangbo said: 'Prior to King of Majestic Voice (Bhīṣmagarjitasvararāja).' Nanquan said: 'You are still the grandson of Old Teacher Wang! Get down!' Huangbo then got up and left." The Master said: "What a pity that Old Teacher Wang only saw the sharpness of an awl's point! If I had been Nanquan at that time, waiting until he said 'Prior to King of Majestic Voice,' I would immediately have sat in the second place, causing Huangbo to be unable to get up for his whole life. Even though it is so, one must also rescue Nanquan."
